Cart abandonment is a funnel problem, not an email problem
Most stores treat cart abandonment as a messaging problem: set up a three-email sequence, add a discount on the second one, and call it done. Recovery emails are worth having — but they only win back a small share of lost carts. The bigger win is finding why shoppers leave and fixing that step.
“Abandonment” is really four different exits
A single abandonment rate hides very different behaviour. Split it by where the shopper stopped:
- Cart → checkout. Shoppers who added items but never started checkout. Often price-checking, saving items for later, or put off by a minimum-order threshold.
- Checkout → shipping. They entered contact details but left at shipping. The usual suspect is unexpected shipping cost or delivery time.
- Shipping → payment. They saw the total and left. Look at taxes, duties and the payment methods offered for their country.
- Payment → order. They tried to pay and failed. Declines, 3-D Secure failures and broken wallets live here — and these shoppers wanted to buy.
Segment before you fix
An overall drop-off number rarely points to a cause. The same funnel split by device, country, traffic source and cart value usually does:
- A shipping-step exit that only happens on mobile points to a form or layout problem.
- A payment-step exit concentrated in one country often means a missing local payment method.
- Exits that rise with cart value suggest shipping or duty costs that scale badly.
- Exits concentrated on paid social traffic may be an audience problem, not a checkout problem.
Fix the step, then email the rest. A recovered cart is good; a cart that was never lost is better.
A simple weekly routine
- Look at the four-step funnel for the last seven days versus the previous seven.
- Find the step with the largest change, then split it by device, country and source.
- Pull the ten most common products in carts that left at that step.
- Write one hypothesis, ship one change, and check the same funnel next week.
IntelliCart builds this funnel automatically from your store and payment data, and you can ask “where did mobile shoppers drop last week?” instead of building it by hand.
